The mahua tree is known as the Kalpavriksha, a wish-granting tree, as all parts of the tree can be used. Its flowers are naturally sweet and have been part of local food systems and festivals across central and eastern India for generations. This box brings together food and culture with our Mahua favourites and art.

About the painting:
Sohrai is a traditional art form painted on the walls of homes in Hazaribagh during the harvest season by female artists. The art depicts motifs from nature, especially animals and plants, using only natural pigments. The Sanskriti Museum is working to preserve this artform on paper as fewer people are painting on homes. We’ve collaborated with them and a group of artists to ensure each painting is made by hand and is one of a kind, so yours will be different from the one in the photos. Your purchase supports these artists and the conservation of Sohrai.

Mahua flowers are naturally sweet edible flowers. They are highly nutritious, containing significant amounts of sugars, vitamins, minerals, protein and fats, along with phytonutrients which contribute to their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. They are used to treat skin diseases, headaches, pitta, and bronchitis.
